Following the events of the first film, Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, has finished his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While in the wizarding world Harry is famous and nearly and legend, in the muggle world he is nobody, and he is back to living with the Dursleys for the summer vacation while waiting for his 2nd school year to start. He is visited by a strange creature, a house elf named Dobby, who warns Harry that bad things will happen if he returns to Hogwarts. Harry does not listen of course since anything is better than living with his aunt and uncle. Dobby begins to vandalize the Dursley's house, which gets Harry locked in his room permanently. His friend Ron Weasley, played by Rupert Grint, comes to Harry's rescue in a flying car, and Harry spends the rest of his vacation with the Weasley's. Once he begins his school year, strange things begin to happen, and Harry and his friends must investigate the secrets going on within the school.

Originally being given a salary of $181,000 for the film, Daniel Radcliffe's pay was bumped up to $3 million after negotiations. Richard Harris, who played Albus Dumbledore for the first and second films, passed away after filming this movie, and Michael Gambon took over the role for the rest of the films. Although the main actors were all children about the same age as their character counterparts, Moaning Myrtle, a student ghost, was played by a 37-year-old actress.

It is directed by Chris Columbus, who also directed Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone. The movie stars Daniel Radcliffe, who later starred in The Woman in Black and Swiss Army Man, Rupert Grint who also acted in Thunderpants and Driving Lessons, and also acting is Emma Watson, who played in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. The film had a budget of $100 million and earned $878 worldwide at the box office.
