After a civil war in Somalia, the Somalian militia declares war on the UN personnel stationed there. The US Army deploys three of its forces to capture the militia leader. They capture a faction leader and make a plan to capture the militia leader's advisors. They capture the advisors but a young private is injured falling from one of the helicopters that was shot at. A group is sent to rescue him. Another Black Hawk helicopter is shot down and several men are killed. The forces go to the crash site to rescue any survivors but are stopped by the Somali militia. Not being able to get there by land, the forces take a helicopter to the crash site where they find a survivor. The two rescuers are killed and the survivor is taken captive. Some of the American forces are caught at the crash site and are attacked by the militia. Finally they are rescued and taken to a safe zone.

movie facts

Black Hawk Down is based on the non-fiction book of the same title that was written by journalist Mark Bowden. Some of the speaking lines heard over the radios were taken from real radio transmissions that occurred during the battle. The crash of the Black Hawk helicopter was a combination of real flying of a helicopter with CGI work. The helicopter did not actually crash on the ground; that was all done via animation.
