Released in February 2010, Before I Fall is Laura Oliver’s first book. In July 2010, Fox 2000 Pictures optioned the book for a feature film. Maria Maggenti was attached to the project as the screenplay writer, with Jonathan Shestack and Ginny Pennekamp as producers. Ry Russo-Young was hired to direct the film in 2011. In the same year, The Black List named Before I Fall as one of the best films unproduced. Shestack, Brian Robbins, and Matthew Kaplan produced the film through Awesomeness Films starting in late October 2015. Before I Fall garnered a total of $18.9 million worldwide vis-à-vis a production budget of $5 million. Its commercial success is reinforced by a generally positive reception. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gave an average approval rating of 63% based on 113 reviews. The website commended Zoey Deutch’s outstanding performance. Similarly, the film received a relatively average rating of 58/100 on Metacritic. Market research firm CinemaScore’s poll of audiences resulted in an average grade of B. U.S.-based surveying service PostTrak assigned an overall positive score of 72%. The film received a nomination at the 2017 Teen Choice Awards. It also earned Zoey Deutch and Kian Lawley nominations at the ceremony, with Kian winning the Choice Move: Drama Actor award.
