movie facts

The title for the movie, American Pie, was attributed to several resources namely: a song, a scene in the film involving pie, and as writer Adam Herz stated: the quest of losing your virginity before graduating high school is as “American as apple pie”. This expression, like many others, immediately draws images of the American heritage. However, apples and pies weren’t always natively American. Apples originated from Europe and Asia, and the Pilgrims were the ones who brought the fruit on to the New Land. Pies were similarly brought in by the Pilgrims, however, they were first as airtight vessels in order to hold, carry, and preserve meat fillings. The evolution of the expression can be traced to the 1860s where it was already commonly present. During World War II, soldiers would remark that they were fighting the war “for mom and apple pie”, which made way for “as American as motherhood and apple pie”. It was in the 1960s that the phrase grew into what we know today: “as American as apple pie”.
