Focus Features optioned the book in March 2014, with Patrick Ness attached as the screenwriter. J.A. Bayona was also employed to direct the film. In April 2014, Felicity Jones was cast to play the protagonist’s mother. In May 2014, Liam Neeson was hired to voice the monster. By August, Sigourney Weaver had joined the project as the boy’s grandmother. The next month, Ness revealed that Lewis MacDougall had been attached to the role of the boy. A Monster Calls premiered on September 10, 2016, at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. It earned over $4 million in the U.S. and Canada and $44 million across the globe for a gross total of $48 million worldwide against a production budget of $43 million. The film was a critical success. At the Gaudi Awards, it bagged 10 awards, including the Best Film, Best Non-Catalan Language Film, Best Director for J.A. Bayona, and Best Production Director for Sandra Hermida.
